How To Improve Your Credit ScoreThe first thing you will have to do to improve your credit score is to obtain your report from all three of the credit reporting companies. Once you have them you should review each one very carefully to see if there is any inaccurate information on them. Any type of information on your report that is inaccurate can lower your score. So get out 3 pieces of paper and a pen and begin taking notes for each of the reporting agencies. Let's first make sure that your personal information is correct. Pay close attention to misspellings of your name, don't forget to look at the aliases that they have listed. Ensure that your address is up to date, that your employment is listed or is correct. It's important that you are aware of how many inquiries that you have authorized to access your credit report, this is important because this can be a sign of identity theft. Then you will want to check for inaccurate information pertaining to your credit history, this will involve companies reporting that you have been late if you haven't, the wrong date that your account was opened, and etc… When you have the list of errors that you want to request the credit reporting companies to remove you will need to circle the items on each of the different reports and them make copies of them. You never want to send the originals. You will also write a letter requesting them to remove the items and why you believe that these items are inaccurate. If you have supporting documents to prove your case it is important to include them, again make sure you make copies of these items. Once you have all the copies you will send it by certified mail, return receipt requested. The reason that it's so important that you send it this way is because the credit bureau is required to investigate every item that you are disputing in 30 days. When you send it certified you know when they received it. There are times that you will need to resend your information, this is an important part of getting negative inaccurate information removed from your credit report. This is the other reason for making copies and keeping track of the times they have received the documents. Keep in mind that persistence and patience will be required in this process to improve your credit score. The credit bureaus will send you the results of their investigation in the mail along with it may be a copy of your report depending if something was changed or not. |
